IT Home, May 30th - Technology media Windows Central released a blog post today (May 30th), reporting that Microsoft continues to advance its Xbox gaming handheld plan, but the current focus is no longer on developing native Xbox handheld consoles, but on optimizing the Windows 11 system for third-party handheld consoles.

The report states that Microsoft has not given up its ambition for Xbox gaming consoles and is advancing in sync with subsequent models of the Xbox Series X. However, the current development focus has shifted from developing native Xbox consoles to third-party OEM handheld devices, mainly to optimize Windows 11 performance.

Microsoft's most critical project among them is Project Kennan, developed in collaboration with Asus, which is expected to be released later this year. The hardware development is nearing completion, but the Xbox and Windows teams are working hard to enhance the software experience.

The rise of SteamOS poses a threat to Windows 11, as it performs better in gaming performance and battery life, prompting Microsoft to accelerate improvements. Devices such as ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go are already running Windows 11, but there is still significant room for optimization.

After shifting its focus, Microsoft has not given up on developing its own handheld devices and is still investing heavily in related technologies internally. Meanwhile, the next generation Xbox cloud gaming system is being tested at the Redmond headquarters with the aim of narrowing the latency gap with NVIDIA GeForce Now.
